Overview

Philosophy of the Programme

The Department of Educational Communication and Technology has structured a Master of Education degree programme in Early Years Education.   The programme is designed to provide principles and concepts which are relevant to the understanding of the lives of children between the ages of birth and eight years. In addition, the programme is intended to meet the needs of a wide range of professionals like teachers, teacher’s trainers, supervisors, managers, curriculum developers and researchers in Early Years Education.  

Rationale of the Programme

Early Years Education is a vital pillar for sustainable development globally. Graduates of this programme will have the capacity to promote globally competitive quality Early Years Education through training and research for sustainable development

Graduates of the Masters of Education in Early Years Education will contribute to Kenya’s industrialized status through research and pedagogy in Early Years Education; which is central in the implementation of the Basic Education Curriculum Framework which adopts a Competence Based Curriculum.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the programme are to enable the student to:  

1.       Acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values relevant to Early Childhood Education.

2.       Examine trends and issues relevant to Early Childhood Education.

3.       Acquire principles and concepts of child development.

4.       Develop competence for carrying out research in Early Childhood Education

DURATION AND STRUCTURE 

The programme shall run for a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of twelve semesters of fifteen weeks each.

  1. M.Ed in Early Years Education shall be offered by course work, examination and project or thesis.
  2. The programme shall comprise 18 course units.
  3. A course unit shall constitute 60 contact hours.
  4. A student shall be required to take a minimum of three course units up to a maximum of six course units in any given semester.
  5. A student taking the programme through project shall take ten core course units,two elective course units and project.
  6. A project shall be equivalent to six course units.
  7. A student shall take 5 core course units in the first semester and five other corecourse units in the second semester.In the third semester, the student shall take two elective course units and  and develop research proposal.
  8. In the fourth semester, the student shall collect data, analyse, write the project and submit it for examination.
  9.  A project shall be equivalent to six course units.
  10. A student taking the programme through thesis shall take ten core course units and thesis.
  11. A thesis shall be equivalent to eight course units.
  12.  A student shall take 5 core course units in the first semester and 5 other core course units in the second semester.
  13.  In the third and fourth semesters, the student shall develop the research proposal, defend it, collect data, analyze, write the thesis and submit the thesis for examination
  14. A thesis shall be equivalent to  480 hrs.

MODE OF DELIVERY OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme shall be offered through Face-to-Face teaching mode, Open Distance and
eLearning (ODeL) mode.

 Face-to-face mode
The programme shall be conducted through lectures, group discussion, seminars, tutorials, case
studies, student-lecturer consultations, supervised independent study, group projects,
demonstrations and e-learning services.

Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) mode
The programme shall be offered by Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) mode. The ODeL mode will involve:

  1. This will include self-instructional print and electronic study materials and other relevant online services
  2.  Written self-instructional study modules and e-learning materials, audiovisual and interactive devices, and self-tests;
  3.  Learning Management System delivered via internet-based technologies such as Skype, e-classrooms, Google meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom;
  4.  Access to learning through training hubs and other resource centres and use of both physical and e-libraries at the University of Nairobi and other institutions
  5. v. Limited face-to-face sessions to provide an overview of the course at the commencement of the semester, mid-semester, and revision period before examinations;

Blended Learning Mode
The course shall also be delivered through a combination of face-to-face, and ODeL where applicable.

The common regulations for the Master’s degrees in the University of Nairobi and the School of Education shall apply. The following shall be eligible for admission into the Master of Education (Early Years Education):

  1. Holder of Bachelor of Education (ECE) degree with at least Upper Second Class honours degree of the University of Nairobi or its equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate
  2. Holder of Bachelor of Education (Arts), B.Ed (Science) degree with at least Upper Second Class honours degree of the University of Nairobi or its equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
  3. A holder of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science of the University of Nairobi with at least an upper second class honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
  4. A holder of lower second class degree in Bachelor of Education (ECE) Bed. (Arts) or  B.Ed (Science) obtained from the University of Nairobi and two years teaching experience or any other equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
  5. A holder of a pass degree in Bachelor of Education (ECE) from the University of Nairobi and five years teaching experience or any other qualification recognized by the Senate.

A Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields with Postgraduate Diploma in Education
