Overview
Background
The Department of Educational Communication ,Technology and Pedagogical Studies has had a Bachelor of Education Degree in Early Years since 2003. The B.Ed. in Early Years programme’s purpose is to train teachers for pre-primary school level, the foundation stage for the child’s life here, now and future. It prepares teachers to have knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and competencies about the child’s total development: physical, cognitive, social, emotional, religious and moral and thus contribute towards improving the status of children through effective teaching. The programme has produced over 2000 under-graduates, some of whom have progressed to graduate levels.
Philosophy of the Programme
The programme focuses on producing graduates who effectively teach and provide leadership to Early Years Education in a technologically-oriented society. The programme underscores that the early childhood period forms the foundation stage for the child’s present and future life.
Rationale of the Programme
Since the year 2000, childcare and education have featured as one of the goals of Education for All (EFA). This has expanded rapidly, necessitating great demand for qualified teachers for Early Years Education. The programme recognizes the importance of laying a proper foundation for future human resources: the children, from conception to nine years.
The objectives of the Programme:
1. Acquire skills, knowledge, values, attitudes and concepts of early childhood education.
2. Explore issues and trends in the development of early childhood education
3. Analyse the justifications for investing in early childhood education.
4. Explore ways of establishing links with the local communities, and other stakeholders of early childhood education.
5. Conduct research in early childhood education.
Structure
Mode of delivery
The programme shall be offered through Face-to-Face teaching mode, Open Distance and eLearning (ODeL) mode in a blended manner.
Face to face mode
The programme shall be conducted through lectures, group discussion, seminars, tutorials, case studies, student-lecturer consultations, supervised independent study, group projects, practicals, demonstrations and e-learning services.
Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) mode
The programme shall be offered by Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) mode. This shall include self-instructional print and electronic study materials and online lectures, seminars and tutorials
Duration and structure
The programme comprises a total of 52 units, organized in four levels. 50 units are core and two electives. Each unit shall constitute 45 contact hours. In order to qualify for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Education in Early Years Education, a student MUST successfully complete a total of 52 units. A student must complete the programme within a minimum of four years and maximum of the eight years. Failure to complete the programme within the eight years of registration shall lead to deregistration.
Admission Requirements
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1 Minimum Admission Requirements
The Common regulations for the Bachelor's degrees of the University of Nairobi shall apply
- A holder of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum aggregate performance of C+ or its equivalent qualifications.
- A holder of professional qualifications such as Diploma in Early Years Education OR Diploma in Education OR Teachers Certificate (S1) from recognized institutions OR its equivalent qualifications.
- A trained primary school teacher of P1 grade and minimum teaching experience of three years.
- A holder of Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) with a minimum of two principal passes or its approved equivalent qualifications.
- A holder of other degrees from a recognized university.
- Any other qualifications equivalent to the above recognised by the University of Nairobi Senate.
2 Regulations for Credit Transfer and Exemption
- A student shall be allowed to transfer credit up to a maximum of one-third of the taught course units, provided that these are from universities recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.
- A student shall be allowed credit transfer in a course unit which is equivalent and/or at the same level as what is offered by the University of Nairobi
- A credit transfer shall be given for unit courses passed at C grade and above.
- A credit transfer shall not be given for a practicum or research project.
- An applicant seeking credit transfer shall send a formal application to Registrar Academic through the Dean Faculty of Education justifying the request and attaching supporting documents.
- Application for credit transfer shall be processed after payment of the prescribed fees
