The Centre for Pedagogy and Andragogy (CEPA) will conduct a 3 day workshop from 31st October- 2nd November 2018 targeting lecturers from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The workshop will mainly focus on training participants in Pedagogy, Andragogy and mentorship. The training will touch on major areas like; Engaging and activating learners during teaching, Application of problem based learning, Curriculum alignment, Lecturer-student mentorship to enhance teaching in the university, Communication skills and Experiential learning and integration of ICT.

The workshop opening ceremony was presided over by the  Acting VC; Prof. Isaac Mbeche. In his opening remarks, Prof. Mbeche highlighted the key steps the University of Nairobi is taking to enhance and sharpen skills of all lecturers to be the best trainers in the region and indeed globally. The University has incorporated Pedagogy and Andragogy trainings and workshops in the University strategic Plan 2018-2023 and lined up a series of in-service trainings that will greatly improve the skills of the lecturers. Further; Prof. Mbeche also urged participants to take advantage of the workshops to learn new skills that will help them engage better with students from undergraduate to post graduate levels.

During the Opening Ceremony, Prof. Isaac Jumba-The College of Education and External Studies Principal gave a brief history of CEPA saying that so far the Centre has trained over 261 lecturers meeting its objective to impart delivery skills to new staff and continuing staff.

Prof. Justus Inyega, Director, CEPA also echoed the words of the Principal by highlighting the major achievements the Center has achieved since inception in 2015. Prof. Inyega  urged participating lecturers to actively participate in the 3 day workshop as it is mainly meant to further improve their teaching and delivery skills.

The training will be conducted by Dr. Cecilia Onyango, Prof. Wahome, Dr. Muchemi, Dr. Catherine Kunyanga, Dr. Karanja and Prof. Inyega.

 

Brief History on CEPA

The University of Nairobi established and launched the Centre for Pedagogy and Andragogy [CEPA) on the 15TH September, 2015. This is a Centre of Excellence charged with the role of training academic staff at the University of Nairobi in teaching methods. The Center specifically does the following: 

  1. Training academic  staff in design and academic programs
  2. Train the academic staff in methods of delivery of lecturers, tutorials, field study trips supervision of students on industrial attachment 
  3. Train academic staff in techniques of assessment and evaluation of learning outcome.
  4. Train academic staff in incorporating mentorship in teaching of students. Core business training academic staff.
